Subtext has always been a mystery to me. I’m kinda dense. I have little to no gaydar, it’s more of a wishing star – “I wish and hope that person is gay”
The first time I saw subtext wasn’t until I read about it in relation to Xena and Gabrielle. I had to check it out and figure it out for myself. I had never heard of subtext on tv shows.
Subtext is the undertone or unspoken words that are conveyed between characters on a tv show. The subtext that is usually looked for is lesbian subtext. For Xena it was a few things, They spent an inordinate amount of time together, men in their lives were short lived and when push came to shove – they picked each other over the men. They had tender moments that would be considered unusual for a best friends. Then there are situations they are placed in – see pic
That show has been off the air for many years and now I find myself relearning what subtext [and maintext] is and enjoying it more with shows I would NEVER watch. My two guilty pleasures for subtext are: Rizzoli & Isles and Once Upon a Time. Both of them scream subtext, R&I more than the other.

The videos above are fan made videos that pull together the emotional relationships ['Ships] that these ladies have for each other. So strong, that they have been accused of saying things that only married couples would say to each other. The story-lines for the TV shows aren’t that great IMHO, but I still sit through them as a way to enjoy the subtext. It’s like being a sleuth and knowing something that most others don’t. That alone is kinda fun!
And my final obsession has a female relationship that is main text – finally a lesbian couple on tv that isn’t used as a ratings gimmick from what I can see. That would be Lost Girl, finally premiered here in the US [been on for 2 yrs in CAN.]and they have an ongoing relationship on this show that is very organic and enjoyable to watch. I’m so glad the writers are being more open with these types of ‘ships and in some cases the actresses themselves are adding their own spin with the knowledge that we are out there watching for the subtext [and maintext].
ok i admit I m pretty attracted to Parrilla lately, but I knew I saw something between her and Jennifer in the show, though I thought I just went crazy watching Xena again lately and I think the subtext just rubbed off of me. But then I found out other people noticed as well
And I started talking yesterday with my friend who is also OUaTime lover or fan and we came with the conclusion that it is the way it should be, or that need to be love story between those two in the show. Ok for the sake of our dear lesbian satisfaction, but if U do not take into account… The two of them are polar opposited, good and bad , good and evil, white and black as we already know etc etc etc. Those two probably wage he final battle. And how to spice it all up and prolong the story but by making them having feelings for each other and trying not to hurt the other coz of that and renewing the battle all the time until well, the final battle simply has to occur etc etc etc
opposites*
There are tons of people who think those two have an extra something going between them. I personally like the undercurrent and wouldn’t want it brought to main text really
