If you put yourself in an attitude that you are being persecuted, then that is what you will be seeing around you. That would include even the smallest bug – a mosquito bites you and you think the world is against you.
I like to read blogs from people who are ‘monitoring’ the glbt movement, about 5 or 6 total. It is quite interesting to read, sometimes I learn about things going on in the gay movement that I didn’t know about, in that way they are handy for keeping me informed. The downside is that they monitor it because they feel they are being persecuted and they feel the need to watch their back – like we are going to come up and hurt them when they aren’t looking. HA!
Recently, a number of these blogs wrote about how they were feeling persecuted with the rush of laws that have made speaking out against homosexuality a ‘crime’, which is a frackin’ lie.
They wrote about the recent law here in Colorado that stops discrimination against GLBT peoples in housing and clarified the restroom issue for transgendered people. Though this won’t stop people discriminating in housing or stop people freaking out when they see a person in transition walk into a restroom, it is nice to know that there is a law that will back us up.
Of course they twist it up and get their underwear in a wad, they say that now they will have to rent to disease ridden and sinful gays or that now pedophiles will have a law to back them up if they want to walk into a restroom dressed as another gender.
First, renting – who the heck knows what a person does in their bedroom, frankly I don’t like the idea of renting to a couple who are picking up random people for a threesome, but since I won’t be needing to fix anything in their bedroom at 3 am, it’s none of my business and when they move out, I will clean the house just as good as if there was a single mother of 4 kids that rented it.
Second, Restrooms – If pedophiles are screwed up enough to dress up as another gender and go into an opposite sex restroom, I’m sure they would do it whether there was a law or not. But that is not the point of this law, a pedophile is a pedophile no matter where they go. It is a crime and them dressing up as the opposite sex won’t stop that, pedophilia is a crime, no law will make it legit.
Another law they are up in arms about is that California law that allows same gendered people to get married. Of course the fundies are trying to override this in November. They believe that ‘activist’ judges are ruling against what was earlier spoken by the California people.
First, ‘activist’ judges – They only cry activist judges if they judges rule against their idea of what is correct, but if a judge rules in their favor, that isn’t an ‘activist’ judge, but one who is thinking of the morality of America. A flashing neon sign of DOUBLE STANDARD!
Second, gay marriages – It is nice to see that Massachusetts hasn’t fallen off into the ocean due to their legalization of gay marriages. Not only did it NOT fall off into the ocean as many fundies would have wished, but the straight marriages haven’t been harmed by it all, they all still love and divorce as they always have.
These laws, along with some other lesser known news articles about people crossing the line from religious preaching to infringing on people rights, have gotten these fundie ‘gay monitors’ up in arms that they are being persecuted. They think that a group of people who are sticking up for themselves and wanting the same rights as their neighbor are activists who are bent on the fundie destruction.
Because of this ‘woe is me’ attitude they see persecution around every corner, they think that the glbt community isn’t going to stop at wanting rights but will also want to shut down any person who speaks out against the glbt community.
The interesting thing is that we in the glbt community only want the boring same rights that straights have had for centuries, the right to be recognized as the boring, monogamous couple that we have always been, the right to see our spouses in the hospitals and make decisions for them, the right to have their property when they die and to get their social security check, among the other 1,138 laws that straights have that I and my spouse do not.
After we fight to get rights, having been on the brunt end of a hateful stick, why would we want to take anything out on them? On the contrary we would rather promote equality and knock away as much hate as possible. Unfortunately, religion does promote so much hate – if you aren’t one of them, you are against them. Thankfully we have a constitutional amendment that provides for equality among all religions, none is greater than the other.. however, when that religion takes steps into my bedroom or my hospital bed or my funeral or my will, then I take action to protect myself and my loved one.
Rights among man and woman have nothing to do with religion except that we all are to be able to worship as we please. Beyond that the two should not go hand in hand. Sadly, the fundies do not understand this and to them THEIR religion must permeate everything, even what their neighbors do and what laws they are allowed.
They are not being persecuted, but instead are finding justification for their persecution of others. Their pride has blinded them to the truth that all men are created equal – both in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of God.
Update: I thought I would add the related link to Kevin’s post on Racism and its link to homohatred
The strategy of playing the victim (I’m not sure it is always conscious though) is very frustrating to me. Evangelicals have done it a lot over the past few decades. Hillary verged on it toward the end of her campaign. No matter who does it, it gets under my skin as a way to manipulate the audience.
Dear Dawn,
Please run for president.

Seriously–your no nonsense, COMMON SENSE approach is so simple–and yet the fundies will not rest until they twist every last word of it. I pray for them.

It’s interesting to see these “victims” tortured by things that don’t pertain to them. Through witnessing this nonsense of my own, these people that you speak of – (probably the same or similar small-mindedness) –they confuse pedophilia with homosexuality. First off, let me just say this: most pedophiles who molest “boys” are heterosexual. They confuse us with rapists, murderers as well as other malicious things they can conjure up.
The best thing to do is to live your life abundantly, beautifully, and joyfully. I had to rid myself of those hateful and demonic people, which is what they are. They call themselves “Christians”, but so do the KKK and white supremacists, right?
Sad.
