I am reading through the book of Genesis, I love the stories but there are things in there that disturb me.
I think it is interesting that when Abraham lied to cover that Sarah was his sister, when she was truly his wife – nothing happened to him. In reading it, it looked like he ended up blessed for it, kings would give him livestock and gold as payment for ‘accidentally’ taking Sarah as their own. This can’t be right.
What about all that Levitical law and new testament law that talks about liars?
Leviticus 19:11-12
11 ” ‘Do not steal.
” ‘Do not lie.
” ‘Do not deceive one another.
12 ” ‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.
1 Timothy 1:9-11 (New International Version)
We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Yet there is still the verses that talk about Abraham being the seed that everything will come from and that even though he wasn’t a ‘jesus-loving’ christian, his life was still credited to him as righteousness.
Genesis 15:5-6 (New International Version)
5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Romans 4:2-4
2If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
4Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation
And that isn’t the ‘bad’ stuff, he slept with another woman, essentially breaking one of the coming commandments, plus he went to war of land with people (murder). Sometimes I don’t even try to figure out what is saying because as I read from the front of the bible to the back, it just seems to get more complicated.
The one good I do see in this is that God accepts belief in him. That would be, directly in him, not through Jesus only. It is via that information that I have hope that God will judge us all justly. True, we wear colored-glasses on this earth because of our prejudices and fears (gays, blacks, jews, etc) So it is nice to know that God is not an *ssfart like some of my neighbors on earth.
It seems frustration with complicated scriptures is going around these days. Today I read this post by you and this one here: http://drybonesdance.typepad.com/dry_bones_dance/2007/08/texts-of-terr-1.html
on judges 19-21 and I think what in the world is this book we read? I will totally agree with you on it being complicated!
Well then. One day I am gonna have to use that phrase “G-d is not an *ssfart like some of my neighbors on Earth.” LOVE it!
